My Heart Sings may have easily been entitled The Take Five Sessions, Volume II. It is Bliss Tavern Musics second exploration of Betty Johnsons classic sound of the late 1950s and early 1960s. She puts the best of her abilities behind the best of American popular song. Rodgers and Harts My Heart Stood Still, Lerner and Loewes Ive Grown Accustomed to His Face, and Cole Porters So in Love swell with new spirit in Bettys care.
Betty always loved the standards, and when she had the opportunity to perform them with the Metropolitan Jazz Quartet way back when, she felt heaven-blessed. Throughout my early career, recording companies were choosing what songs I would sing, Johnson has said. These are songs I wish I could have sung [more of] all those years ago.
Fortunately, Betty did have the opportunity to interpret these standards forty years ago. The performances melt your heart, your resistance.
